Dad Bod Legend David Harbour Says His HELLBOY Will Be ‘Shakespearean’

On one hand, it's going to be weird to approach a new Hellboy picture without Guillermo del Toro at the helm. On the other, Stranger Things star and unlikely sex object David Harbour is going to be donning the shaved horns with The Descent master of disaster Neil Marshall directing, so I really can't be that negative about having to watch this durn thing. 

Anyway, Harbour was recently speaking with Vanity Fair about all things Dad Bod related, and dropped a few nuggets about his upcoming take on the character: 

"It’s a classically complicated hero. He’s a creature that was meant to bring about the end of the world, and he just sort of wants to be a good guy. He’s got that complexity to him. He’s also a monster who lives among human beings, so he’s in a sense fighting for human beings against his fellow monsters, and yet the humans hate him because they fear him and they think he’s weird looking and everything."

So, that pretty much sounds like the Hellboy we all know and love, but then Harbour elaborated on how he thinks he can inject new life into a character Ron Perlman owned pretty definitively in both GDT's first film, and the stone cold outsider classic, The Golden Army: 

“He has a heart that’s really good and with a lot of this crusted-over stuff. What I’m dealing with in Hellboy is a lot different, bigger in a certain way. It’s very Shakespearean. It’s demons and witches and stuff like that. But it has a similar core to a dude who’s trapped in horrible circumstances who’s just trying to be a good guy.”

Demons and witches and stuff? That sounds pretty fucking swell to me. When combined with Marshall's promise that this is going to be an R-rated, CGI light affair, and Harbour's vow that taking the role will not ruin a physique that gifted a million big, tall, beer-swilling motherfuckers like myself hope that there's still a future in front of the camera for us all, nothing but good news is coming out of this camp. Combined with a cast that includes Milla Jovovich as the big bad (Nimue, The Blood Queen) and Ian McShane stepping in for a dear departed John Hurt as Professor Broom, this movie could be a heckuva a good time (you thought I was gonna say "helluva", didn't you? Suckas.) 

Guess we'll all find out when Hellboy comes back to theaters January 11th, 2019.
