Don’t Take Off Your Blindfold: The First BIRD BOX Trailer Has Arrived

Just don't call it a QUIET PLACE rip-off.

Hollywood's been trying to do something with Josh Malerman's Bird Box ever since its publication in 2014, and it finally took the creative team of Susanne Bier (The Night Manager) and screenwriter Eric Heisserer (Arrival) to pull it off.

The book - a grim little horror offering involving an inexplicable, worldwide invasion by a bunch of unknowable creatures who cause people to go violently insane on sight - is a fun read, and one I was reminded of many times while watching John Krasinski's A Quiet Place earlier this year. The film's first trailer (which just arrived, via Netflix) will likely inspire others to make that comparison, as well.

Just remember: technically speaking, this one came first.

That's a pretty solid trailer! The cast looks great, the action looks intense and frightening, the creatures (whatever they may be!) are kept appropriately hidden. This looks pretty much like the movie I imagined when I read Malerman's novel...here's hoping this version has a slightly better ending!

Here's an official plot synopsis from Netflix:

"When a mysterious force decimates the world’s population, only one thing is certain: if you see it, you take your life.  Facing the unknown, Malorie finds love, hope and a new beginning only for it to unravel. Now she must flee with her two children down a treacherous river to the one place left that may offer sanctuary. But to survive, they'll have to undertake the perilous two-day journey blindfolded. Academy Award® winner Sandra Bullock leads an all-star cast that includes Trevante Rhodes, with Sarah Paulson, and John Malkovich in BIRD BOX, a compelling new thriller from Academy Award® winner Susanne Bier."

It's unfortunate the conversation surrounding this one will likely revolve around the film's obvious similarities to A Quiet Place, but here's hoping the final product's solid enough that it doesn't end up mattering much. We have room in our hearts for two horror movies based on senses, and hope this one's a winner (also, bonus: Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross did the score).

Bird Box hits Netflix on December 21st, just in time for Christmas. You gonna check it out or what?
