Santa Steals A Car In The New CHRISTMAS CHRONICLES Trailer
Look, I'm not here to tell lies, so I'm not gonna stand here and claim that Netflix's The Christmas Chronicles looks like it'll be up my alley. I am on the record as being a Christmas grinch, one who finds the vast majority of the holiday's trappings to be insufferably cloying. I get enough of that in real life, thank you very much, I do not need to encounter said trappings in my entertainment.
But I will say this: if I were ever gonna watch a heartwarming family comedy wherein a couple of kids learn the true meaning of Christmas from a grizzled Santa Claus who dunks gifts down chimneys, flagrantly steals cars, and thinks he can pay for things with candy canes, well, it'd probably be this one.
In donning the red robe and that bushy white beard, Kurt Russell joins a startlingly extensive list of actors who've played Santa Claus (random sampling: Paul Giamatti, George Wendt, Paul Sorvino), and he looks damn convincing in the role! Not so sure I can get onboard with those elves (one of them has a blowtorch; you can't trust a fucking elf with a blowtorch), but it's admittedly infectious to see how much fun Russell's having here. He's the best.
Will that be enough to get me to watch The Christmas Chronicles? Oh, almost certainly not. But this one clearly wasn't intended for me, so that's okay. Here's a plot synopsis, straight from the streaming giant's lips to your ears:
"THE CHRISTMAS CHRONICLES, a holiday adventure from producer Chris Columbus (“Home Alone”, "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone") and director Clay Kaytis ("The Angry Birds Movie"), tells the story of sister and brother, Kate (Darby Camp) and Teddy Pierce (Judah Lewis), whose Christmas Eve plan to catch Santa Claus (Kurt Russell) on camera turns into an unexpected journey that most kids could only dream about. After staking out Santa’s arrival, they sneak into his sleigh, cause it to crash and nearly derail Christmas. As their wild night unfolds, Kate and Teddy work together with Santa - as you've never seen him before - and his loyal Elves to save Christmas before it's too late."
