UPDATED Surprise: Showtime Just Announced PENNY DREADFUL: CITY OF ANGELS

Rejoice, PENNY DREADFUL fans.

Here's what I know about Showtime's Victorian horror series, Penny Dreadful: people have been telling me to watch it for years, and people were very bummed when the show came to an end back in 2016. This brings me to a third thing I know: those very same people are probably gonna be very excited about this:

That's Showtime announcing Penny Dreadful: City of Angels, which - as you can see above - will be set on an entirely different continent at an entirely different period in history. This time around, the action will unfold in 1930's Mexico, in a new narrative that'll blend the soapy chills of the original series with Mexican-American folklore. As of this writing, we know nothing further about who's writing it, who'll star in it, or when we might see it. Sorry about that. We'll probably know more in the near future.

In the meantime: this is quite the unexpected surprise! Like I said up top, I never got around to watching Penny Dreadful, but the raves I've heard from a number of highly trusted individuals lead me to believe that the above news will be met with no small amount of excitement.

The Hollywood Reporter has some choice info and quotes from John Logan that help offer a better idea of what we can expect from the show.

For starters, it looks like real history will play a larger part:

"Penny Dreadful: City of Angels will have a social consciousness and historical awareness that we chose not to explore in the Penny Dreadful London storylines," Logan said. "We will now be grappling with specific historical and real-world political, religious, social and racial issues. In 1938, Los Angeles was facing some hard questions about its future and its soul. Our characters must do the same. There are no easy answers. There are only powerful questions and arresting moral challenges. As always in the world of Penny Dreadful, there are no heroes or villains in this world, only protagonists and antagonists; complicated and conflicted characters living on the fulcrum of moral choice."

So that’s a bit different, a much more true-to-life show. But there will still be supernatural elements. Characters will be aligned with Santa Muerte while others will be hanging with the devil.

You can read more here, but for now, this is all very exciting, especially for fans who felt shorted by Penny Dreadful’s brief three-season run.
