Legendary Anime NEON GENESIS EVANGELION Is Coming To Netflix

This is a pretty big deal.

Here's a surprising piece of news, via Deadline: legendary anime Neon Genesis Evangelion, long difficult to find via legal means here in the United States, will soon be coming to Netflix. That's all 26 episodes of the series, plus two movies - Evangelion: Death True and The End of Evangelion.

Look, there's a trailer and everything:

On top of that, Netflix is also adding Ultraman and Saint Seiya: Knights of the Zodiac to its roster, where it'll join already-announced anime shows based on Pacific Rim and Altered Carbon. Looked at on the whole, it's clear Netflix is aiming to deepen its anime catalogue, all of which is very exciting news for fans of that particular genre.

The Neon Genesis Evangelion thing, though - even an anime-ignorant dum-dum like myself knows that's a big deal. By all accounts, that one's a stone-cold classic. What's it about? Well, here's Netflix's description:

"A.D. 2015. Tokyo 3 is under attack by powerful creatures known as the Angels. The protagonist, Shinji Ikari, is chosen to pilot the Humanoid Decisive Weapon Evangelion — the only way for humanity to fight against the Angels. The battle for the fate of humanity starts now. What exactly are the Angels? What fate awaits the young pilots and humanity itself?"

That sounds pretty cool, I guess, but if you're as unfamiliar with the property as I am, I'd recommend checking out this Twitter thread from Aaron Stewart-Ahn, co-writer of this year's mind-meltingly awesome Mandy and trustworthy authority on anime-related matters. His description of the series (and the drama surrounding it) left me way more curious to check it out than the above synopsis did, so much so that I'm actually considering giving anime yet another shot when the series hits Netflix early next year.

Are y'all excited about this? Hyped to see Netflix deepening its anime bench? Neither hyped nor bummed? While we're talking about anime, should I STFU and finally get around to watching Attack on Titan like I've been threatening to? Sound off in the comments below, and stay tuned for more as further updates roll in.
