Love During Reconstruction: Here’s The Smoldering Trailer For THE AFTERMATH

Keira Knightley is having a strange 2018. Her turn as ghost writer Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette in Wash Westmoreland's Colette might end up earning her an Academy Award nomination come next Spring. Meanwhile, this Sugar Plum wasn't sweet enough for audiences, as Disney's troubled The Nutcracker and the Four Realms just scraped past its (disclosed) production budget at the global box office, marking the picture as one of Disney's few flops. She's also got a role in the world cinema omnibus Berlin, I Love You (which apparently just released in Germany last week), but we barely know anything about that movie and knowing about movies is our job. 

Come Spring of 2019, Knightley's got The Aftermath, a rather sumptuous-looking WW II romantic melodrama about a British Colonel (Jason Clarke) and his wife (Knightley) who're assigned to live in Hamburg during the post-war reconstruction. Tensions rise with the German who previously owned the house (Alexander Skarsgård), especially once he and the solider's bride strike up some clandestine intimacy. From the looks of this newly-released trailer, there's a bit of a Merchant/Ivory vibe going on here, and that's OK by us.

Fans of the Knightley/Clarke collective will note that this is the second time the duo have portrayed a married couple together (their first being the 2015 mountain climbing disaster epic, Everest). Part of me wonders if we'll see this play a Spring festival (SXSW?) before it hits general release, which means I'll more than likely have a review for you then.
