UPDATED: That CANDYMAN Reboot Is Actually A Sequel (And Has A Director Now)

Back in September, we learned that Jordan Peele and his Monkeypaw Productions were in talks to reboot Candyman, and anyone who's ever seen Candyman lost their damn minds. What a perfect marriage this would be! In one corner, you got this generally undervalued and socially-conscious horror property from the '90s; in the other, the director and company who rode their socially-conscious horror film, Get Out, all the way to Oscar glory earlier this year. Sure, "reboot" isn't our favorite word, but the news was simply too good to bitch about.

In the time since, all's been quiet on the Candyman front, but today brings another exciting update - two of 'em, actually. According to Variety, Monkeypaw has set Little Woods director Nia DaCosta to direct the project...and it's a contemporary/"spiritual" sequel which'll take the action back to the Cabrini-Green housing projects where all this nasty Candyman business got started.

Says Jordan Peele:

“The original was a landmark film for black representation in the horror genre. Alongside Night of the Living Dead, Candyman was a major inspiration for me as filmmaker — and to have a bold new talent like Nia at the helm of this project is truly exciting. We are honored to bring the next chapter in the Candyman canon to life and eager to provide new audiences with an entry point to Clive Barker’s legend."

DaCosta's a relative newcomer to the industry, with just one feature under her belt. That'd be the Tessa Thompson-starring Little Woods, which came out earlier this year (and racked up a 100% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes). It's unclear at this time whether or not she's writing the new Candyman in addition to directing, but we're curious to find out.

UPDATE: Well, that didn't take long! According to Deadline, the Candyman screenplay is being co-written by Peele and Win Rosenfeld. What's more, it also has a release date - June 12, 2020. Please updates your records accordingly and stay away from mirrors.
