Jake Gyllenhaal May Have Just Dropped Some Serious SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME Hints
National treasure and future Spider-Man: Far From Home star Jake Gyllenhaal joined Instagram today, and to mark the occasion he uploaded a funny little clip of himself reading - and being very caught off-guard by! - an old issue of Marvel's The Amazing Spider-Man.
Things are about to get nerdy in here, but before we go on, let's watch this:
Taken at face value, the video - in conjunction with the tag ("I just realized I'm not playing Spider-Man") - is pretty funny! Ha ha, foolish Jake Gyllenhaal, you shot an entire movie without realizing which character you were playing?! Will your incorrigible hijinks never end?
But if we dig a little deeper, there may be more going on here than meets the eye. As you know, Spider-Man: Far From Home will find Gyllenhaal playing Mysterio, a villain who uses mindgames and special effects to pull off his dastardly crimes. In his earliest appearances in the Spider-Man comics, he used these very same powers to impersonate Spider-Man himself.
This was extremely un-chill behavior, as illustrated here:
So here's what we're thinking: perhaps Spider-Man: Far From Home will reveal that Mysterio's been impersonating Peter Parker's heroic alter-ego while he was off dealing with the events (and, more to a point, getting evaporated by the events) of Avengers: Infinity War. Thanos snaps his fingers, Spider-Man disappears, Mysterio sees his opportunity, and next thing you know: bam, Spider-Man's out in these streets robbing banks and just generally being an asshole to everyone. If we're right about this, we're guessing Spider-Man won't be amused once he gets back from the Infinity War sequel.
Of course it's possible that we're reading too much into this, but given the trickster nature of Gyllenhaal's character and the fact that the Marvel Marketing Machine has an iron grip on these sorts of social media posts, we're willing to bet that legit hints are being dropped.
