It’s Official: Werner Herzog Will Appear In Disney’s New STAR WARS Series

We've been up to our elbows in casting rumors regarding Disney+'s forthcoming streaming Star Wars series, The Mandalorian, but today we've finally confirmed the one and only rumor that ever really mattered to us: Werner Herzog will be on the show.

He'll be joined by a bunch of other people we already knew (or suspected) would be a part of the series, but weren't entirely sure about until the following announcement, via StarWars.com:

"Pedro Pascal (Narcos) has been cast in the title role as a lone Mandalorian gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy. He is joined by Gina Carano (Deadpool), Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad), Emily Swallow (Supernatural), Carl Weathers (Predator), Omid Abtahi (American Gods), Werner Herzog (Grizzly Man), and Nick Nolte (Affliction)."

Carano! Esposito! Weathers! Nolte! Herzog! That's quite the eclectic cast. As for who Herzog might be playing on the series, well, this is a Star Wars project, so we know absolutely nothing. We know Pedro Pascal's headlining, we know all these other people are in it, and we know that Taika Waititi's going to direct an episode. 

Oh, and hey - you know who else is gonna direct episodes? These folks:

"The Mandalorian is written and executive produced by Jon Favreau, with Dave Filoni (Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels) directing the first episode and serving as executive producer alongside Kathleen Kennedy and Colin Wilson. Additional episodic directors include Deborah Chow (Jessica Jones), Rick Famuyiwa (Dope), Bryce Dallas Howard (Solemates), and Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok)."

All of that is very exciting, but let's get back to the topic at hand: is it a Good Thing that Werner Herzog is joining the Star Wars franchise? There will surely be grumbling from some of the more dignified corners of Film Twitter and the like, but from where we're standing: more Herzog is never a bad thing. And who knows? Maybe he'll be playing a villain (something he should be doing all the time, quite frankly) like he did in the first Jack Reacher movie.

Anyway, we're eager to learn more about The Mandalorian as further updates become available. We don't know when it'll arrive quite yet ("late 2019" is all we have to go on at the moment), but we'll keep you informed. Stay tuned.
