Are We Supposed To Be Looking Forward To SPAWN Or Dreading It?

A quick look back at all the warnings Todd McFarlane has given us about his directorial debut.

The good folks at Nerdist scored a new interview with Spawn director Todd McFarlane over the holiday break, and (as per usual) it contains yet another eyebrow-raising quote about how joyless and not-fun Spawn is gonna be.

Says McFarlane about his directorial debut:

“There’s no joy. There’s gonna be no fun lines in it, and it’s just gonna be this dark, ugly two hours worth of movie, which is essentially what a lot of supernatural/horror movies are anyway. There’s not a lot of funny in them. And that seems to be a weird hurdle for a lot of people in this city to get over because they sort of go into a superhero/Avengers default all the time.”

The quote's getting a lot of attention this morning, but this is right in line with many other things McFarlane's said about Spawn over the years. Since being officially announced in July of 2017, McFarlane has also told everyone the film...

Say what you will about McFarlane's complete lack of experience behind the camera. Say what you will about edgelord '90s superheroes. Say what you will about how some other dark-n-gritty comic book movies have fared with audiences. But don't you dare say that McFarlane hasn't been consistent. The man knows what he wants. Whether it's a good way to build legit hype for your movie is another question entirely, and one we won't know the answer to for some time.

Speaking of which: Nerdist says McFarlane and company (including a cast that includes Jeremy Renner and, in the titular role, Jamie Foxx) are still in pre-production on Spawn. We have no idea when we're actually gonna see this thing, but we are fascinated to see how it turns out.

Stay tuned for more on Spawn as further updates become available.
