Sounds Like Matt Reeves Is Making The BATMAN Movie We Always Wanted

You will believe the World's Greatest Detective can detect.

Been a while since we heard anything on Matt Reeves' forthcoming The Batman, hasn't it? Back in August, Reeves appeared at an event for the Television Critics Association and dropped a number of minor updates in our laps, but since then it's been all quiet on the Batman front. Today brings us a small update, though!

In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Reeves describes The Batman thusly:

“It’s very much a point of view-driven, noir Batman tale. It’s told very squarely on his shoulders, and I hope it’s going to be a story that will be thrilling but also emotional. It’s more Batman in his detective mode than we’ve seen in the films. The comics have a history of that. He’s supposed to be the world’s greatest detective, and that’s not necessarily been a part of what the movies have been. I’d love this to be one where when we go on that journey of tracking down the criminals and trying to solve a crime, it’s going to allow his character to have an arc so that he can go through a transformation.”

A Batman movie which focuses on Batman in World's Greatest Detective mode? People, this is the Batman movie we've been waiting for. Of course we've seen nods to this in previous Batman films (remember The Dark Knight's "piecing back together a shattered bullet" sequence?), but in general the Batman films have traditionally focused on Batman's ass-kicking abilities (or the villains he's up against). Give us a Batman trying to solve a series of grisly murders. Give us montages wherein Batman shakes down supervillains for information. Hell, just give us The Long Halloween, now that I'm thinking about it.

And, hey, speaking of supervillains (plural), Reeves also confirms The Batman will feature a "rogues gallery" and that the casting process will begin soon. As for when the film will actually arrive, well, Reeves says nothing's set in stone, but they're currently eyeballing "late spring or summer" of 2021.

We're into everything going on here. How 'bout y'all? Sound off in the comments below, and stay tuned for further updates on Matt Reeves' The Batman as they roll in.
