Here’s The First Trailer For Danny Boyle’s Beatles Rom-Com, YESTERDAY

Back in August, the first real details regarding Danny Boyle's Yesterday escaped into the wild thanks to Ed Sheeran, who revealed that the film would be some sort of alternate-dimension parable about a man who wakes up one day in a world where no one knows who the Beatles are ... and immediately decides to capitalize on that ignorance be claiming the songs as his own. 

At the time, that sounded pretty interesting! Why, something like that could skew a little dark, tackling the impostor syndrome and creative ownership all in one fell swoop, and with Danny Boyle at the helm it could very interesting, indeed. We heard that plot synopsis and we pictured a very specific kind of movie.

Turns out, Yesterday is probably not that movie.

This is the first trailer for Danny Boyle's Yesterday, and - as you can see - this isn't a dark, alternate-reality character study so much as it is a (mostly) feel-good rom-com with Beatles music and, one presumes, a lesson to impart. It looks slick and well-shot and quick on its feet in the same way that all Danny Boyle films do, but it was probably not made with the BMD staff in mind. We are decidedly not feeling it. 

But hey, maybe you will! Here's a lengthy plot synopsis, via press release:

"Jack Malik (Himesh Patel, BBC’s Eastenders) is a struggling singer-songwriter in a tiny English seaside town whose dreams of fame are rapidly fading, despite the fierce devotion and support of his childhood best friend, Ellie (Lily James, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again). Then, after a freak bus accident during a mysterious global blackout, Jack wakes up to discover that The Beatles have never existed … and he finds himself with a very complicated problem, indeed.

Performing songs by the greatest band in history to a world that has never heard them, and with a little help from his steel-hearted American agent, Debra (Emmy winner Kate McKinnon), Jack’s fame explodes. But as his star rises, he risks losing Ellie — the one person who always believed in him. With the door between his old life and his new closing, Jack will need to get back to where he once belonged and prove that all you need is love."
