HER SMELL Trailer: Like Riot Grrrl Spirit
Her Smell premiered at last year's Toronto International Film Festival, and though some reviewers were repelled by its challenging content, nearly everyone praised Elisabeth Moss' lead performance. That's enough to make me interested, and that's before seeing today's trailer.
Moss stars as Becky Something, the lead singer of fictional riot-grrrl band Something She, who's reckless, unprofessional, drug-addicted, and generally unpleasant. Over five distinct acts, Steve Jobs-style, Moss and writer/director Alex Ross Perry paint a portrait of this character that our reviewer Luke Hicks described as both "a mammoth accomplishment" and "like watching a repulsive, viscous cesspool substance drain from its toxic, upside-down container at an excruciating speed." Impressive, coming from a co-writer of Christopher Robin. The cast also includes Amber Heard, Cara Delevingne, Virginia Madsen, Ashley Benson, Dan Stevens, and Eric Stoltz, which is a pretty great lineup of talent, and you can see a glimpse of all of this below:
Yep - "repulsive, viscous cesspool" sounds about right, given what we're seeing here is the film's more palatable material. Elisabeth Moss is one of our great underappreciated and underutilised actors, even counting the plaudits for her work on The Handmaid's Tale, and it's great to see her get to really stretch her acting muscles.
Her Smell releases on April 12.
