New BRIGHTBURN Trailer Asks, “What If Superman, But Super Evil?”

For months, Sony and producer James Gunn played coy as to what David Yarovesky's Brightburn was about. We knew it was a horror film of some sort, but the exact logline was kept under wraps all the way until December, when the film's first trailer arrived. Turned out, Brightburn was basically a retelling of the Superman origin story ... only this time, Superman turned out to be a gigantic asshole.

A new Brightburn trailer arrived today, reiterating that premise.

Folks, the Birth.Movies.Death. crew is very excited about this movie.

A horror-tinged "What if?" scenario writ large, Brightburn seems perfectly content to wear its inspirations on its sleeve, and it looks like the resulting film will be fucking awesome. It also looks like it'll be pretty gnarly: among other things, this trailer features our villain (Jackson A. Dunn) crushing a little girl's hand, reaching his arm into a running lawnmower (don't worry, he's fine) and an eyeball being punctured with a shard of glass (yikes). We're thrilled someone made this movie, but doubly thrilled at the suggestion that they didn't pull any punches. Bring. It. On.

Here's a synopsis, in case any of the above was unclear:

"What if a child from another world crash-landed on Earth, but instead of becoming a hero to mankind, he proved to be something far more sinister? In this horrific take on the classic superhero trope, a couple (Elizabeth Banks and David Denman) adopts a baby who came from the stars. While they attempt to raise the boy (Jackson A. Dunn) to use his powers for good, an evil begins to grow inside that he unleashes."
