AGFA To Release The Two Greatest Movies Ever On Blu This Summer

We’ve discussed the merits of Wakaliwood here before, but no amount of description or praise can replace the experience of actually watching these things with a group of friends. I first saw Who Killed Captain Alex alone with a screener, and while I thought it was great, the experience was nothing compared to seeing Bad Black with a group of friends at Fantastic Fest.

Luckily, you don’t need a whole theater to get the most from these films. Just a couple pals and maybe some beer will do the trick. And AGFA. AGFA is going to help as well. Check it out:

American Genre Film Archive, the largest non-profit genre film archive in the world, is excited to announce a June 11, 2019 release date for WAKALIWOOD SUPA ACTION VOLUME 1, featuring BAD BLACK and WHO KILLED CAPTAIN ALEX.

 

Welcome to Wakaliwood, Uganda: home of “DA BEST OF DA BEST MOVIES!” and the vanguards of DIY commando cinema. Under the guidance of writer-director-producer-cinematographer-editor Nabwana Isaac Godfrey Geoffrey (IGG), Wakaliwood’s crack crew of self-taught filmmakers and martial arts aficionados produce dozens of action films in the Kampala ghetto of Wakaliga with budgets that rarely exceed $200 USD. Utilizing scrap parts to build computers, machine guns, and a full-sized Huey helicopter, these real-life superheroes inspire more heart, imagination, and soul than a thousand Hollywood blockbusters. 

 

“We’re honored to help the two most out-of-control brain-blasts in the Wakaliwood canon reach a wider audience,” said AGFA director Joe Ziemba. “In 2016, BAD BLACK won the coveted Audience Award at Fantastic Fest in Austin, and now the rest of the world can find out why.”

 

AGFA’s release of WAKALIWOOD SUPA ACTION VOLUME 1 marks the first time in history that a movie from Uganda will be released on Blu-ray.

 

“We were waiting for the technology to catch up (or perhaps catch down) before unleashing the film to a hungry audience,” said Wakaliwood founder Nabwana IGG. "That's what we do, after all. Look around you. All I see are people who are hungry. Starving! For Action. Kung Fu. Explosions. Adventure. That's where we come in. As a small village in Africa, we at Wakaliwood are determined to provide for every person on the planet who is hungry. For Action Movies."

 

Ahead of the home video release, Alan Ssali Hofmanis (Wakaliwood Ambassador and America’s Greatest Action Star — according to Uganda), alongside stars Ebola Hunter and Seggwanyi da Killer Gourd, will embark on a cross-country tour to present the films and shoot a new action film with Nabwana IGG directing via Skype from Uganda. The tour kicks off on May 13 at New York City’s Museum of Modern Art (MoMA).

 

“The truth is, I have no idea what is happening,” said Alan Ssali, the native New Yorker who sold everything he had to move to Uganda and be part of Wakaliwood. “It’s like I joined the Circus. Things get weirder all the time. Now I’m going on a tour? Okay!”
