Keegan-Michael Key And Meryl Streep Are Going To PROM Together
Well, looks like Ryan Murphy's highly lucrative deal with Netflix has started to pay off: according to Deadline, the American Horror Story creator will next write and direct an adaptation of the Tony-nominated stage musical The Prom for the streaming giant, and he's assembled one helluva cast to pull it off.
"Meryl Streep will star alongside James Corden, Nicole Kidman and Ariana Grande, with Awkwafina, Keegan-Michael Key and Andrew Rannells playing key roles.
What's it about? I'm glad you asked:
"In Prom, Streep will play Dee Dee Allen, a two-time Tony winner who teams with Corden’s Barry Glickman in a flop musical about Eleanor Roosevelt. After career-ending reviews, they decide — along with Broadway babies Kidman as Angie Dickinson and Rannells (Book of Mormon) as Trent Oliver — to champion a cause to rehabilitate their careers. They find one in Emma, a high school senior in Indiana who isn’t allowed to take her girlfriend to the prom."
Interesting things to note here: Keegan-Michael Key and Meryl Streep starring in a musical together is a concept that's never crossed our minds, but now that we've heard it - we need it immediately; James Corden can be a grating presence, but we're curious to see what kind of performance Murphy pulls from him; and, last but certainly not least, it's worth mentioning that Netflix is already thinking in terms of the 2020 awards season for this one, with a theatrical release planned before Prom hits streaming. These folks really, really wanna win one of those trophies, don't they? Let's see if they can!
On a personal note, Ryan Murphy's output has always been super hit-or-miss for me, but this project (and, more specifically, its eclectic cast) has me very curious. Genuinely looking forward to hearing more about this one, and we'll keep you informed as further updates roll in. Stay tuned.
