THE POLITICIAN Gets A Delightfully Deranged Trailer

ELECTION, Ryan Murphy style.

It was only a matter of time before Ryan Murphy developed his own politically-themed project (especially after the surprisingly good Cult season of American Horror Story) – behold, the first trailer for The Politician, Murphy's upcoming dark comedy series for Netflix, which stars Ben Platt as a politically ambitious teen who sees his high school election as a stepping stone to the White House:

The Politician features a few Murphy friends and regulars, including Jessica Lange (definitely having a good time here) and Gwyneth Paltrow, alongside Murphy newbies like Zoey Deutch and Lucy Boynton. But this is clearly a showcase for Platt, who you probably recognize from the Pitch Perfect movies, and it certainly looks as though he's gleefully sinking his teeth into this Election-esque tale of high school politics. The series, which is part of Murphy's overall deal with Netflix, premieres on September 27. Here's the official synopsis:

Payton Hobart (Ben Platt), a wealthy student from Santa Barbara, California, has known since age seven that he's going to be President of the United States. But first he'll have to navigate the most treacherous political landscape of all: Saint Sebastian High School. To get elected Student Body President, secure a spot at Harvard, and stay on his singular path to success, Payton will have to outsmart his ruthless classmates without sacrificing his own morality and carefully crafted image. Full of comedy and sly satire, Ryan Murphy's The Politician offers a rare glimpse into just what it takes to make a politician.
