A Bidding War Has Erupted Over The Rights To Turn UNDER THE SKIN Into A TV Series
As revealed by the folks over at Deadline this morning, a bidding war has broken out between A24 and Silver Reel over the rights to produce a TV series based on Jonathan Glazer's 2013 film Under The Skin. You hear something like that and your first thought might be, "Oh, shit, they're making an Under The Skin TV series?!", but the reality is a little less exciting than that.
Says Deadline:
"Under The Skin was made by Seventh Kingdom Productions, which counts Glazer and producer James Wilson among its directors. Silver Reel was involved in appointing administrators last year to carve up its assets — the equivalent of filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the U.S. The TV rights are now essentially being sold to the highest bidder."
Silver Reel was one of many financiers (along with Film4, the BFI and Creative Scotland) who bankrolled Glazer's film, and since Under The Skin's release, Silver Reel has been particularly interested in bringing the property to television. Talks have, indeed, occurred between Glazer, Wilson, Silver Reel, and others about the concept - with each expressing varying degrees of interest - but after "nearly two years" the project never quite got off the ground. Now that Seventh Kingdom Productions (who made Glazer's film) is being dissolved, with its assets being sold off to the highest bidder, both Silver Reel and A24 (who are working with Glazer on his current film) are basically gunning for the rights to continue those conversations, and perhaps ultimately put an Under The Skin TV series into production.
See what I mean? That's all much less interesting than "Holy shit, Under The Skin's gonna be a TV series!" It is, however, intriguing that multiple parties involved believe in the idea enough to keep this drama going, and we do think an Under The Skin TV series has potential, especially if they dive farther into the novel the film was based on (which, believe it or not, is actually way weirder than the movie).
