The First SPIRAL: FROM THE BOOK OF SAW Trailer Invites You To Play A Game
Mere minutes after dropping the film's very first poster, Lionsgate has released the first trailer for Darren Lynn Bousman's Spiral: From The Book of Saw (aka The New Saw Movie That Somehow Has Chris Rock In It). It is, as anyone who watched the bootlegged/leaked trailer that made the rounds yesterday can already tell you, very good.
See if you don't agree.
Perhaps I'm being harder than necessary on the franchise, but this looks markedly better than the last few Saw sequels, right? A higher-quality production, with a genuinely intriguing cast (Chris Rock's headlining, Samuel L. Jackson's in there somehow, and Max Minghella's certainly no slouch) and what appears to be a plot with something on its mind beyond the goings-on found in the average Saw installment.
Here's an official plot synopsis:
"A sadistic mastermind unleashes a twisted form of justice in SPIRAL, the terrifying new chapter from the book of SAW. Working in the shadow of an esteemed police veteran (Samuel L. Jackson), brash Detective Ezekiel “Zeke” Banks (Chris Rock) and his rookie partner (Max Minghella) take charge of a grisly investigation into murders that are eerily reminiscent of the city’s gruesome past. Unwittingly entrapped in a deepening mystery, Zeke finds himself at the center of the killer’s morbid game."
Listen, we thought we were all done caring about the Saw franchise. After however-many sequels across however-many years, that thing truly seemed to be running on empty, creatively-speaking. We're both intrigued and excited for whatever Rock (who's executive producing, and who apparently came up with the angle for this sequel) and Bousman have cooked up, and will absolutely be there when Spiral hits theaters on May 15th.
