Luca Guadagnino Will Direct A SCARFACE Reboot Written By The Coen Brothers

Here's a sentence that will cause your brain to instantly liquify and expel itself out of your earholes: according to Variety, SUSPIRIA and CALL ME BY YOUR NAME director Luca Guadagnino has signed on to direct a SCARFACE reboot, from a script written by Joel and Ethan Coen. This version will be a "reimagining of the immigrant story told in both the 1932 and 1983 films, and will be set in Los Angeles." 

Well.

It's unlikely anyone involved here needs to be introduced to the BMD readership. You know Guagagnino from CALL ME BY YOUR NAME and 2018's way-better-than-it-had-any-right-to-be SUSPIRIA remake, as well as 2015's A BIGGER SPLASH and 2010's I AM LOVE. Helluva director. And the Coen Brothers ... well, I'd feel foolish rattling off any of their long list of accomplishments to this audience, but their most recent effort was 2018's THE BALLAD OF BUSTER SCRUGGS, and the pair have monkeyed around in the gangster genre before, most notably with 1990's MILLER'S CROSSING. It must be said that this version of a SCARFACE reboot strikes us as quite a bit more compelling than the version Antoine Fuqua was kicking around back in 2018.

Guadagnino is currently wrapping up work on an HBO limited series by the name of WE ARE WHO WE ARE, as well as developing a LORD OF THE FLIES remake for Warner Bros. He's a busy dude, and it's currently unclear when production on this SCARFACE reboot might begin, nevermind when we might actually get to see it.
