Renny Harlin Also Wants To Make A Hercules Movie

Kevin Sorbo is so sad right now.

We already have the one iffy sounding Hercules project coming our way courtesy of Brett Ratner and The Rock. Now, as if ordered by some cosmic entity with a sharp eye for practical jokes, Renny Harlin also wants to make a Hercules film, this one called Hercules 3D. Not only that, but the Harlin Herc is getting fast tracked to ensure it beats the Ratner version to the DTV and VOD market. Sounds like a sure-fire recipe for quality filmmaking. Or bread pudding.

If you were to put Brett Ratner and Renny Harlin into the Thunderdome, I'm pretty sure Harlin would win, but it'd be one of those things were we all lose a little bit. I say that as a fan of many of his films. And when I say I'm a fan of his films, I mean I haven't watched any Renny Harlin films in over a decade. The only exception is for The Long Kiss Goodnight, which, sure enough, was not nearly as good as I remembered. This is why I go out of my way to not rewatch Cliffhanger.

As for Hercules' sudden (supposed) popularity, I guess it makes sense since he's more or less a public domain super hero with which studios can do as they please without angering nerds. According to Harlin, his take on the guy will be more like Gladiator than Ratner's graphic novel adaptation. I don't really know what me means by that. Perhaps instead of referring to the Ridley Scott film, he's actually referring to the Gladiaattorit, a Finnish television game show he directed in the mid-1990s. If so, I can't wait!
