Johnny Depp Wears No Silly Hats In The First BLACK MASS Trailer

Wait, does a bad combover count as a "silly hat"? Asking for a friend.

The first trailer for Scott Cooper's Black Mass has arrived, and, against all odds, there's not a single silly hat in sight. Johnny Depp might be rocking some wacky contacts, sure. He might be doing what you'd consider a funny accent. One might even make the very reasonable claim that a cartoonishly bad combover is, at the end of the day, its own form of silly hat. But let's give credit where credit's due: the silly hat count in this trailer stands at zero, and for that, we are grateful.

I'm also grateful that I don't immediately dislike what Black Mass is selling! I even sorta dig this trailer, truth be told. Cooper's film tells the Hollywood-true story of Whitey Bulger, the infamous Boston gangster who was recently handed two consecutive life sentences (plus fives years, just in case) for his role in...well, just about every horrific mob-related crime that occurred in Boston in the '70s. Bulger eventually turned informant for the FBI, a move that blew up in the Feds' face when Bulger proved to be uncontrollable and, y'know, violently psychotic. The story of Whitey Bulger is a crazy one, well worth telling and definitely worth its own movie.

Will Cooper's Black Mass be that movie? Time will tell, but I like what I see in the trailer. Yeah, they're cribbing from Goodfellas with the "Family secret" thing, and yeah, Depp's still working with a few distracting affectations...but what can I say? I like the energy of this clip, and Cooper's cast is definitely worth being excited about. I'm going to align myself with Team Cautiously Optimistic here, and hope it pays off.

What do you guys think?
