Mel Gibson Says He Almost Played Thor’s Dad
In a new interview with The Guardian, Hollywood fallen angel Mel Gibson claims that he was approached about playing Odin (the Anthony Hopkins role, as though you needed to be told) in Thor. Here's the exchange:
Ever been approached to be in a superhero film?
Yeah, long time ago, to play Thor’s dad. But I didn’t do it.
Huh. Well, that's an interesting alternate-reality version of Thor to consider. One wonders why Gibson turned the role down. One also wonders if Gibson might pass on that same offer today...or if the same offer might even be made.
By the way, if you're wondering where Gibson stands on superhero movies these days, here's what he has to say:
Some are good. Some are kind of funny...Guardians of the Galaxy. Or the first Iron Man. And some of them are just like retreats. I mean you can watch them do Spider-Man five times...There is a slight shift in film. But, then again, I think all films are suffering from people not being able to now open them with their name. It’s a different kind of business these days.
Hey, that's basically where I stand on superhero movies, as well! I always tend to enjoy the MCU's more overtly funny entries (Guardians, Ant-Man, Iron Man, Iron Man 3), and I, too, am pretty much bored to death with Spider-Man at this point (good news is, I love the new iteration of Spider-Man introduced in Captain America: Civil War, and suspect that the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming will be just the breath of fresh air this character needs).
I wonder what Gibson thought of Batman V Superman? Someone ask him, if you happen to run into him.
