The BMD Week That Was: Hurricane Harvey, TWIN PEAKS And Tobe Hooper

Most days, a whole lot of stuff passes across our front page. Sometimes worthy stories disappear a bit too quickly. For that reason, we’re putting together an overview of how the week went down. From crazy news stories, to editorials we love, to just plain goofy articles that deserve a second look - this is The BMD Week that Was.

What a crazy, insane week. As most of you probably know, both I and Meredith live in Houston, TX and spent a lot of this week dealing with Hurricane Harvey. Meredith wrote a great piece about it here and also told us of an Alamo Drafthouse fundraising initiative to help victims of this horrible disaster that will affect people’s lives for years to come.

But the site kept chugging along anyway and had a week full of exceptional articles we’re very proud of. Let’s start with Twin Peaks. Jacob (this week’s MVP, as you’ll see) wrote a great article on the miracle of Kyle MacLachlan’s acting in the new series while also taking a look back at Fire Walk With Me. As for last week’s episode, Scott took over reviewing duties. For those keeping score, Meredith will review the final two when that sad time comes.

Speaking of sad times, we lost the great Tobe Hooper last week. Jacob not only wrote a great tribute but also this list of five underrated Hooper films that show what an interesting voice he had.

We were especially rich in reviews this week. Just look at all these titles: Goon 2, Menashe, Birth of the Dragon, The Layover, England is Mine, The Deuce season premiere, and Kill Me Please. Hulk also had something to say about propaganda in Wolf Warrior 2 while Jacob wrote this great article about Beach Rats. 

And we got a lot of older films written about as well. Jacob looked at Hot Rod ten years on as well as LA Confidential at 20. Greg MacLennan wrote about Pennies from Heaven. I covered The Front Page as part of our MUBI movies series. Jacob also looked at The Astrologer and the state of modern cult fandom.

On the comics front, Siddhant tried to explain/defend Marvel's recently-concluded Secret Empire and also wrote a moving tribute to Jack Kirby.

Broad Cinema this week paid tribute to Serenity's Zoë Washburne. The Savage Stack covered John Frankenheimer's Seconds. Jacob also ran the first of his new column, Exploitation TV, the second of which will arrive later today. Collins' Crypt did its quarterly horror review. Phil got in a great Bond After Dark. Scott managed to Say Something Nice about House on Haunted Hill. And finally, Andrew covered that great Game of Thrones season finale.
