X-Men Spin-Off THE NEW MUTANTS Gets A Spooky Trailer

We should've believed them when they said it's a horror movie.

2017 has been good to the X-Men. Legion was a head-trip, The Gifted somehow turned out to be good despite its drab trailers (I know, right?) and Logan was hands-down one of the best films this year. The next property stepping up to bat? Josh Boone's The New Mutants, which looks... different.

Take a look:

Turns out when Boone said they were making "a full-fledged horror movie within the X-Men universe," what he meant was they were making "a full-fledged horror movie within the X-Men universe." Fancy that. On one hand, if you axe the Marvel logo and any knowledge of the X-Men, it looks like your average January flick. On the other, the cast looks great and they're probably hiding some of the fireworks for Trailer 2.

I couldn't possibly tell you what's going on here, but what I can tell you is I'm glad it's not another mutants-saving-the-world movie with some lazily tacked on bigotry metaphors. This really does look like a self-contained story where Anya Taylor-Joy's Magik, Maisie Williams' Wolfsbane, Charlie Heaton's Canonball, Henry Zaga's Sunspot and Blu Hunt's Mirage work their way through a seemingly haunted mutant facility. Like all of this year's X-Men entries, it also seems to have the best possible answer for where it fits in the franchise continuity, which happens to be "Who cares?"

The New Mutants arrives April 13th 2018. What do you folks think?
