Luca Guadagnino Details His CALL ME BY YOUR NAME Sequels

Luca Guadagnino is enjoying his time in the sun right now, as Call Me By Your Name is on just about every critic's Best Of list (including this one's), and generating a massive amount of Oscar buzz. In the past, Guadagnino had mentioned that he wanted to follow up the hit bisexual romance with several sequels, and now he's gone into a little more detail regarding what they'd look like. 

Speaking with The Guardian, the Italian director said:

“These characters are so fantastic, and I want to know what happens to them. The last 40 pages of the book tell you about 20 years in the life of Oliver and Elio. So I started to think about Michael Apted’s Up, and the cycle of films [Francois] Truffaut devoted to the character of Antoine Doinel. And I thought, maybe it’s not a question of sequel, it’s a question of chronicling everyone in this film. I think seeing these characters growing in the bodies of these actors will be quite fantastic."

That's a pretty ambitious proposition, and while it'd be exciting to see Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer return to the roles they so perfectly embodied in Call Me By Your Name, part of what makes the original so special is James Ivory's adaptation of André Aciman's coming-of-age novel. One half of the legendary Merchant/Ivory production team, the scribe will be ninety years old next June, so they better get cracking on a set of screenplays in order to retain that voice. 

Still, Guadagnino's personal artistic touch is truly what we'd all be lining up to see in the next five films, so as long as he's manning the camera to follow-up his own masterwork, we're all on board for whatever these turn out to be.
