You’ll Never Believe This, But THE NEW MUTANTS Has Been Delayed Again
Late last night, Deadline revealed an array of release date switcheroos for a number of 20th Century Fox projects, chief among them Simon Kinberg's X-Men: Dark Phoenix and Josh Boone's The New Mutants, the latter of which has already gone through one major release date change.
We'll get to those in a minute. First, let's get the other delays on record:
"The release date for the Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, which has been going through some speed bumps with its directors, has been pushed up from December 25 to November 2"
And...
"The adaptation of Don Winslow’s The Force was originally scheduled for March 1, 2019, but Fox has decided to delay the release to a yet-to-be-determined date. Instead, Joe Cornish’s epic medieval adventure The Kid Who Would Be King will take its place, moving from February 14, 2019."
Yes, Bohemian Rhapsody (which, as you know, stars Mr. Robot as the legendary Freddie Mercury) will arrive several weeks early, while The Force is being delayed indefinitely (this one's understandable: we recently learned Scott Frank had been hired to rewrite that film's David Mamet script, which all but guaranteed a delay of some sort). Meanwhile, the long-awaited second directorial effort from Joe Cornish, The Kid Who Would Be King, will take its place (given what fans we are of Cornish's Attack The Block, we will allow it, bruv).
But what's going on with these X-movies?
Well, X-Men: Dark Phoenix is moving from November of this year to February 14th of next year, with no real reason given for the delay other than the fact that Bohemian Rhapsody is now taking its spot. The New Mutants' delay is a bit harder to swallow: it's not the first time this project's been shoved deeper into 20th Century Fox's schedule, and now it's set to debut in August of next year (early on, the plan called for New Mutants to arrive in April of 2018; a previous release date change bumped it to February of 2019).
As for why that might be the case: word on the street says that a fair chunk of New Mutants has been reshot to include a new character, though we're not entirely sure who that new character might be, or why adding that character might have delayed New Mutants sixteen months past its originally planned release date. Hopefully everything's on the up and up over there, but - real talk? It's getting harder and harder not to think of New Mutants as a troubled production. Might not hurt if someone associated with the film (Josh Boone, for instance) were to go on the record and discuss the situation in detail, if only to put fans' minds at ease.
