Do Danny McBride & David Gordon Green Already Have HALLOWEEN Sequels Written?
The hype levels here at BMD for David Gordon Green and Danny McBride's Halloween are through the fucking roof. After the trailer dropped last week, we need this movie now, not later (check out our intense breakdown of the footage here).
Well, it sounds like - should the rest of the world be just as into this new sequel to Halloween as we are - that David Gordon Green and Danny McBride already have some ideas in place for how they'd want to approach a follow-up. In fact, they actually considered pitching making two Michael Myers stalk and slash pictures. From Kenny Powers himself (speaking with EW):
“We were going to shoot two of them back-to-back. Then we were like, ‘Well, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. This could come out, and everyone could hate us, and we’d never work again. So, let’s not have to sit around for a year while we wait for another movie to come out that we know people aren’t going to like.’ So, we were like, ‘Let’s learn from this, and see what works, and what doesn’t. But we definitely have an idea of where we would go [with] this branch of the story and hopefully we get a chance to do it.’”
Oh shit. So, do McBride and Green already have another movie written and waiting in the wings? Based on the reaction to the teaser released last week, it may have been a good move if they do, because people are foaming at the mouth to see their Halloween. Yet you also have to respect the collaborators' notion to actually learn how to tackle these movies going forward, based on fans' reactions. They're not just putting their feet to the fire with a string of horror films we all may end up despising.
While we're on the topic of sequels, Green also spoke to EW about how the duo decided to include all of the entries that followed John Carpenter's classic '78 dead teenager indie. While the mythology for the Halloween series has been altered entirely - with the brother/sister connection between Michael and Laurie erased, and Laurie now looking to step into Dr. Loomis' Ahab role - there are still some sly nods to the sequels contained in that spot (Silver Shamrock masks!). Green says:
“We watched all of them and I can actually enjoy all of them. But there just felt like such a simple truth to the original. I think by the time you add Michael and Laurie’s relationship, being family, or he’s only hunting his family, it takes that ‘Boogeyman’ out of it. I want everyone to be afraid of him. The first one really had that anonymity to who he was. [We are] stripping down the backstory, and philosophy, and motivation, and, you know, themes of cults, and things like that. In this one, we’re trying to go bare bones and tell a horrifying story of questions that have no answers. It’s just bad shit that happens.”
Hell yes, getting Michael back to being 'The Shape' is way more in line with Carpenter's original subtext of a pervasive evil invading the places we believe to be the safest (read: white American suburbia). This is the best possible explanation these two could've offered for the decision.
