Edgar Wright Has Joined The List Of Directors Being Considered For BOND 25

In which another exciting contender drops into the fray.

Yesterday was a day comprised almost entirely of Bond 25 news.

First, we took a look at what precipitated Danny Boyle's sudden (and very unexpected) departure from the project. Then we learned the search for a new director might delay Bond 25's already-announced November 2019 release date. Then, mere hours later, we learned that, no, actually: Bond 25 wouldn't be delayed ... assuming the production could lock in a script and find a suitable director in the next 60 days.

In that final post, we also learned (via Deadline) that three directors were currently in the running for the gig: Jean-Marc Vallee (Dallas Buyers Club), David Mackenzie (Hell or High Water) or Yann Demange (White Boy Rick). Sometime after we ran this post, Deadline updated that directorial wish list with yet another name: Edgar Wright.

So, this changes the playing field a bit.

Vallee, Mackenzie and Demange are all interesting choices for the next Bond, to be sure, but Wright's something else entirely - a fanboy favorite, one coming off the massive success of Sony's Baby Driver. There are interesting choices, and then there are extremely exciting choices.

Here's the thing, though: we find it highly unlikely Wright would take the gig. Having been unceremoniously chewed up and spit out by the Marvel Studio Machine, we can't imagine he'd be interested in a project that'd come with so many creative restrictions. Of course an Edgar Wright Bond 25 would be amazing, but that version of the film is probably not the same one Bond's gatekeepers are wanting to make. It's fun to consider, we're in agreement on that, but we just can't imagine it happening.

Then again, who knows? Stranger things happen every day. This is, after all, the Brave Year of Our Lord Two-Thousand And Eighteen. If you told me a cartoon dog wearing sunglasses had officially signed on to direct Bond 25, I'd probably only give it a minimal amount of side-eye.

Stay tuned for more as further Bond 25 updates roll in.
