Trent Reznor And Atticus Ross’ BIRD BOX Soundtrack Is Now Available For Purchase
Perhaps, with all the hoopla surrounding the holidays and the ongoing memeification of Bird Box (which, yes, forced Netflix to issue a warning against people undertaking "the Bird Box challenge"), you'd forgotten that Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross produced the soundtrack for that movie. You may have forgotten even this while watching Susanne Bier's film, considering how subtle this particular collection of Reznor/Ross jams is.
Yes, much like the work they turned in for Jonah Hill's Mid90s, the Bird Box soundtrack is unobtrusive and low-key (compared to, say, the duo's Social Network soundtrack, which may as well have been listed as a cast member on the film's poster), but that isn't to say it isn't great. It is great, and now it's available for purchase.
Here's a statement from Reznor, via Nine Inch Nails' website:
OUR SCORE FOR THE FILM BIRD BOX IS NOW AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE IN HIGH-RESOLUTION HERE. THIS SAME VERSION WILL APPEAR ON STREAMING SERVICES BY JAN 25TH (OR SOONER). LIKE ALL SOUNDTRACK RECORDS WE RELEASE, WE AIM FOR THESE TO PLAY LIKE ALBUMS THAT TAKE YOU ON A JOURNEY AND CAN EXIST AS COMPANION PIECES TO THE FILMS AND AS THEIR OWN SEPARATE WORKS.
WE CREATED A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF MUSIC AND CONCEPTUAL SOUND FOR BIRD BOX, A LOT OF WHICH NEVER MADE IT TO YOUR EARS IN THE FINAL VERSION OF THE FILM. WE’VE DECIDED TO PRESENT YOU WITH THIS VERSION OF THE SOUNDTRACK RECORD THAT REPRESENTS WHAT BIRD BOX IS TO US. WE HOPE YOU ENJOY.
FOR THOSE INTERESTED, WE WILL BE RELEASING A MORE EXPANSIVE (READ: MORE SELF-INDULGENT) PHYSICAL-ONLY OFFERING THIS SPRING THAT WILL CONTAIN AN ADDITIONAL HOUR OF MUSIC AND ARTWORK THAT COLORS FURTHER OUTSIDE THE LINES… ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK!
LOTS COMING IN 2019,
TRENT
So, we're actually getting two versions of the Bird Box soundtrack: the expanded version that's available now, and an even more expanded, "self-indulgent" physical release that'll arrive later this year. Pretty nifty!
As for that "LOTS COMING IN 2019" message at the end, well, we already know Reznor and Ross will be scoring HBO's Watchmen and Trey Edward Shults' forthcoming musical, Waves. What else might they be working on? Our money's on a live album assembled from various performances off Nine Inch Nails' recently-wrapped tour, which found the band performing songs they'd never played live (and older, more obscure tracks the group hadn't touched onstage in years). It's a very exciting time to be a NIN fan.
Anyway, here's one of the unreleased tracks from Bird Box. Stay tuned for more Reznor/Ross news as further updates roll in.
