New SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK Poster Is Not For Arachnophobes

CBS Films released the first Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark poster back in February, and at the time we championed the decision to put Harold - one of Scary Stories' most iconic, disturbing characters - front and center on that one-sheet. Clearly, we thought, this movie and its marketing team know what they're doing. 

This belief is reiterated by today's poster, which takes on another classic entry in the Scary Stories oeuvre: "The Red Spot", about an unfortunate young woman whose face explodes when it turns out a nest of baby spiders has been laid in her cheek (lemme tell ya, y'all - kids' books in the '80s were fucking wild).

Let's take a moment to appreciate the following: based on everything we've seen thus far, it really looks as though Hollywood (specifically, director André Øvredal and executive producer Guillermo del Toro) have produced a Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark adaptation that honors the legit horror of Alvin Schwartz's novels. It truly seems as though no punches are being pulled, that they're leaning into the grotesquerie of those books in both look (which matches artist Stephen Gammell's illustrations to a T) and tone (read: extremely unpleasant and, somewhat hilariously, aimed at children). We're so excited about this.

Good news is, we don't have to wait much longer to see Scary Stories for ourselves. Øvredal's film hits theaters on August 9th. Stay tuned for further updates on this one as they become available (word on the street suggests we're getting a new trailer this week; fingers crossed on that front).
