(UPDATED) AVENGERS: ENDGAME Is Demolishing Box Office Records Left And Right
Earlier this week, we ran a post built around a bit of speculation we read over on Deadline: the possibility that Avengers: Endgame might earn $300M during its opening weekend here in the United States. The number seemed insane, borderline unbelievable, and more than one colleague privately broke my balls about running such hyperbolic speculation as a news item. "No one really thinks that's gonna happen," was the gist.
Well, it's now midway through Avengers: Endgame's opening day, and there's a new update to gawk at:
"It’s even bigger than originally seen this morning. Disney/Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame is tearing up all the record books with a $140M-$150M opening day, blasting away Star Wars: Force Awakens‘ record first day and single day records of $119.1M. Industry estimates have Endgame‘s weekend between $315M-$330M. Don’t be stunned if it goes higher. The entire industry is in a complete state of shock."
State of shock, indeed. Avengers: Endgame is absolutely dominating at the worldwide box office right now, currently on track to pull in over $300M here in the States while adding another $305M to its coffers in its first two days of release overseas. Deadline's (generally very reliable!) box office reporting is now speculating that we may see a $1B worldwide total by the time Monday rolls around. It's a staggering thing to consider.
UPDATE: Well, believe it or not, the box office projections for Avengers: Endgame are now even higher. According to Deadline, the Russo Brothers' film enjoyed a $157.5M opening day yesterday ($38.4M higher than the record established by The Force Awakens), with another $102-110M+ expected for today. Projected total for the weekend now stands at an absurd $349-356M.
"Consider that amount of money for a minute – $349M-$355.8M. That’s a total that many studios hope their tentpoles generate in their domestic lifetime. It’s an amount of cash that’s close to $100m higher than the $257.6M record opening of Avengers: Infinity War! (on the high-end of that range Endgame is $98.2M higher). Also on the top end of the range, Endgame‘s start is $107.8 higher than Force Awakens’ $247.96M start."
Yowza.
Anyway, we'll have to wait and see what this thing looks like after the weekend, after all the dust has settled, but with multiple records having already fallen (both of them - best single day and best first day - belonging to Star Wars: The Force Awakens), it's not crazy to think we might see even more records fall by the time this is all said and done.
